Be Your Own Woman!
With the Astra Awards just gone, and the Logies coming up, there’s been a bit of media attention, understandably, on ‘fashion’, and particularly, what our celeb women are wearing.
Wondering what fashion icon Coco Chanel would make of today’s outfits – I’m sure she would agree that Kerri-Anne looked amazing in that classically elegant blue gown by Mary Ioannidis, at the Astras – I started to remember some of her more poignant quotes; “A girl should be two things; classy and fabulous” and; “Fashion fades, only style remains the same”.
She was a very clever, entrepreneurial and stylish woman who had an undeniable talent for seeing life, and expressing herself, authentically. It got me thinking about what women wear and the importance of being “stylish” rather than fashionable.
Chanel was also famous for prescribing that a woman should check herself in the mirror and remove one accessory, before leaving the house. This was because she endorsed being ‘understatedly’ elegant. She was not gaudy or “blingy” in today’s language.
I agree with her philosophy. I see it almost every day – women who seem intent on wearing as much jewellery as they can. Less is more ladies! Choose a few beautiful pieces and give them the recognition they deserve. Don’t have your pieces compete with one another for attention. Now don’t get me wrong, I am a jeweller, and I encourage you to buy and own as much jewellery as your heart desires, just don’t wear it all at once.
A beautiful pendant, or necklace, doesn’t need anything to support it. And it doesn’t need to be expensive to be beautiful, for as the old saying goes; ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’ – my advice, is simply not to clutter and confuse the eye! True style, is generally created by subscribing to the “less is more” axiom.
A number of women come into our showroom and having decided upon a certain piece, then change their mind and look to spend the same amount, but on more, less expensive pieces. Our advice is always the same, it is personal preference, but if you see something that really talks to you, that makes you smile immediately, that you know you will wear regularly…then buy it. Style is about recognizing who you are and expressing it. It is about creating a tangible ‘identity’ of what’s important to you. Fashion on the other hand, is about following trends. Style is about the person; fashion is about the clothes.
Truly beautiful things are timeless. They never go out of style. Style is about attitude rather than affluence and it can be created on any budget.
We have been helping women identify and create their own style for decades because we ask questions, and we genuinely care. We are bespoke jewellers for a reason. Not everyone has the same taste. We are all individuals and therefore, there is no “one size fits all” approach when it comes to jewellery or style.
Fashion is for followers.
Style is for anyone wanting to express themselves.
